Although
there are some exceptions, the following criteria must be
met before an individual is considered for surgery:
Patient
must be at least 100 pounds or more over ideal body weight,
or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more - BMI can
be calculated using the chart below. A Patient may be considered
for surgery with a BMI of 35 - 40 with certain severe co-morbidities.
Patient
must have previous unsuccessful efforts at weight loss,
including medically supervised diet plans, exercise, and
behavioral modification programs.
Patient
must be between the ages of 18 and 60.
Patient
must demonstrate a willingness to make the necessary changes
in lifestyle and eating habits.
Patient
must demonstrate a commitment to the Center for Obesity
Surgery's behavioral modification and support group program,
as well as long term follow-up.

which is a number that expresses the relationship between
your height and weight.

Contraindications
for surgery
There
are some conditions that might disqualify you for surgery.
Dr. Afram and his team will discuss any potential contraindications
with you during your pre-operative screening. Possible contraindications
include alcoholism, hepatic cirrhosis with impaired liver
functions, serious psychiatric disability, and correctable
hormonal causes of obesity.
